Kings Dominion

Kings Dominion

We try to change our offerings every year, which means we want to expand our park in some shape, way or form. Whatever it is that we do, we find it very easy to work with the county administration to get things done.

Pat Jones, Vice President and General Manager, Kings Dominion

Kings Dominion is a popular family amusement park located in Doswell, Virginia. The 400-acre park attracts more than two million visitors per year and is known for its state-of-the-art roller coasters, rides and attractions.

Kings Dominion opened its gates to the public for the first time May 3, 1975. Attractions for the first season in 1975 included the Rebel Yell roller coaster, Lion Country Safari Monorail, Log Flume, a Steam Train, Sky Ride, Galaxie roller coaster, Scooby Doo roller coaster, and the park's signature attraction, the Eiffel Tower.

Today, Kings Dominion offers more than 60 rides, shows and attractions, including Intimidator 305, the tallest and fastest roller coaster at the park; Dinosaurs Alive!, an animatronic dinosaur park that features close to 40 life-sized dinosaurs; and a 20-acre waterpark.

Hanover County stood out as the prime place to build the amusement park. Hanover’s proximity to major highways and cities was a huge factor in the selection of the Doswell site.

“Hanover County is centrally located. It has a great location with respect to Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia, Baltimore and the Hampton Roads/Tidewater area,” says Pat Jones, vice president and general manager of Kings Dominion. “The park is right off of the well traveled corridor of I-95, and isn’t too far from I-64. It’s only 20 minutes away from Richmond.”

Kings Dominion’s confidence in its location shows. “We’ve done capital investments of upwards of $65 million. We really and truly believe in the site, the area we do business in,” Jones says.

“We have absolutely flourished here,” Jones adds. “We’ve had record-breaking years in the last three years.”

The business climate in Hanover County is another plus.

“Hanover makes it easy to do business. It’s a well-planned, well-run area. Things are well thought out in order to have sustained, logical growth.”

Expanding the park has been straightforward, too. Says Jones, “Timelines are strong, reasonable, dependable. The process is consistent, and the County is very responsive. We can get our new offerings on the field quickly.”
