Hanover’s Perspective

Construction Set to Begin for Lewistown, Rt. 360

Two long-awaited projects to relieve congestion on two of Hanover County’s busiest thoroughfares are slated to begin in spring 2015.

Replacement of the bridge on Lewistown Road over I-95 is expected to cost $18.2 million with construction beginning in spring 2015. The project is expected to be complete in fall 2017.

“The Lewistown Road area is one of Hanover’s hottest development corridors with the Winding Brook and Northlake Business Park developments,” said Edwin Gaskin, director of Hanover County Economic Development. “It’s visibility from I-95 makes it prime commercial real estate, and improvements to the Lewistown Road bridge will make the area even more enticing to potential investors.”

The new bridge will provide at least a 16.5-foot vertical clearance to reduce strikes from tall vehicles on I-95. For added capacity and safety, the project will also widen the bridge to four lanes, add turn lanes and shoulders and relocate one of the adjacent exit ramps.

The existing 54-year-old structure currently has a 14-foot clearance and has been struck by vehicles traveling along I-95 three times in the past three years.

Another project to widen and improve U.S. 360 is expected to cost $9.4 million is expected to begin in spring 2015. Construction is anticipated to be complete by spring 2017.

The project will include constructing eight lanes from I-295 to the proposed Bell Creek Road intersection and six through lanes from Bell Creek Road through the Wynbrook Lane intersection for added capacity and safety. The project will also add turn lanes and a median between the two directions of traffic.

The Lewistown project was awarded to W.C. English Incorporated of Lynchburg. The Route 360 project was awarded to J.L. Kent & Sons of Spotsylvania.
