Hanover’s Perspective

Frommer’s Names Region a Top Worldwide Destination

Frommer’s, recognized globally for their travel expertise and publications, has recently named the Richmond region as one of their top travel destinations – worldwide – for 2014.  Richmond was one of only three U.S. locations on this elite list.  “We cover the entire planet — that is a lot of options,” said Jason Cochran, editor in chief of Frommers.com.  in a Richmond Times-Dispatch article.  “Sometimes when we select places, we don’t just select them to introduce them to our readers.  (Richmond) is one of those places that I think deserves a second look, which is why we chose it.”

In addition to noting that many of the region’s battlefields and landmarks are associated with the 150th Civil War anniversary, Frommer’s  also recognized the museums, architecture and “… a growing slate of breweries, farm-to-table restaurants, and even white-water river rapid activities cutting right through downtown.  While you weren’t looking, Richmond got cool.”

“Raising the profile of Hanover as a destination for tourists is an important economic development initiative.  We’ve seen a healthy uptick in tourism here in the past year and a long history of being a favorite family destination.  Even with that ongoing tourism success story, we were surprised and completely delighted that Frommer’s has named the region as a Top Worldwide Destination this year,” says Edwin Gaskin, Hanover County’s Economic Development Director.  Tourism is an instant revenue generator for Hanover.  In 2012, tourism generated $204 million in direct expenditures, supported over 2,353 jobs and provided $12.2 million in state and local taxes according to the Virginia Tourism Corporation.

In addition to our Civil War sesquicentennial activities this year, Hanover will host some routes for the UCI World Road Cycling championship in 2015.  Gaskin notes, “Hanover has a wealth of historical sites, ample outdoor recreational opportunities, picturesque rural landscapes, and some heart-stopping thrill rides that all work together to attract millions of tourists to our area every year.  The Frommer’s recognition will attract even more visitors to our community.”
