As excitement builds for a successful new year, we also take time to reflect on our top stories of 2016. Not surprisingly, the most-read stories are those that highlighted the moments that helped us innovate, prosper and grow over the past year.

We look forward to what’s to come in 2016, and we thank you, Hanover County, for generating some great stories in 2016! Here are the top stories of the past year, as determined by page visits:

Top Teen Bowlers to Compete in Hanover
In 2017, Hanover County is set to host the Teen Masters Bowling National Championships, the premier high school championship bowling competition in the U.S. The event will be held at AMF Hanover Lanes in Mechanicsville on July 2-7. It is expected to bring approximately 400 high school students and their families from across the U.S. and the world. (Read more)

Filtration Manufacturer Expands in Hanover
Porvair Filtration Group, a manufacturer of high-technology filtration systems for demanding applications, has moved into a 55,000-square-foot facility located at 301 Business Lane in Ashland. In 2007, Porvair established its U.S. office in the Lakeridge Business Center in Hanover County when they acquired Omnifilter and Manufacturing Inc. The move to Business Lane allows for Porvair’s expanded operations and doubles their operating space. (Read more)

Hanover County Schools Among Top in Virginia
Hanover County Public Schools (HCPS) received full accreditation from the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) for 2015-2016. HCPS reports that Hanover is one of the largest school divisions in the Commonwealth to experience this level of success at all of its schools. Students exceeded all of the Standards of Learning (SOL) benchmarks set by the VDOE in English, math, history, and science, as well as exceeded the state average on all 29 SOL tests. (Read more)

Hanover Initiative Garners National Award, Business Opportunities
Hanover County has won a national award for a program intended to bolster economic development. Named the “Strategic Zoning Initiative,” the program creates a win-win situation for property owners who own large tracts within the suburban services area that are particularly well-suited for business purposes. (Read more)

Devon USA Breaks Ground in Hanover County
Devon USA is breaking ground on the development of a 320,853-square-foot high-bay distribution building on North Lakeridge Parkway within the Enterchange at Northlake Industrial Park in Hanover County. A Richmond-based real estate developer, owner and investor with a diverse portfolio of assets in the Southeast and Midwest United States, Devon USA has constructed and renovated more than 5.3 million square feet of space. (Read more)
