Hanover’s Perspective

Hanover Sheriff’s Office Hosts Active Shooter Presentation

The Hanover Sheriff’s Office is taking a whole community approach by providing training and best practices should you encounter an active shooter situation. This free presentation will be held at the Hanover County Administrative Building at 7516 County Complex Road on March 3 from 7–9 p.m.

“Nationally, these types of events are on the rise and history has shown us they can occur anywhere,” said Deputy Jim McLaughlin, crime prevention specialist. “In this presentation, you will hear the latest information on preparing, responding and dealing with an active shooter event.”

The Department of Homeland Securing defines an “active shooter” as an individual who is engaged in killing, or attempting to kill, people in a confined and populated area.

Active shooter situations are unpredictable and evolve quickly. Typically, the immediate deployment of law enforcement is required to stop the shooting and mitigate harm to victims. Because active shooter situations are often over within 10 to 15 minutes — before law enforcement arrives on the scene — individuals must be prepared both mentally and physically to deal with an active shooter situation.

Those who should attend include Business Watch Coordinators and their employees, Neighborhood Watch Coordinators and Block Captains, Worship Watch Coordinators and team member or anyone who would like to learn more about preparing for such an incident.

Please register for the program by contacting McLaughlin at 804-365-6335 or jpmclaughlin@hanovercounty.gov. For more information, visit www.hanoversheriff.com.
