Hanover’s Perspective
Hanover Sheriff’s Office Offers Business Watch Program
In increasing numbers, Hanover County businesses are taking an extra step to prevent crime in their communities by enrolling in the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Business Watch Program.
“More than 400 businesses are currently enrolled in the program countywide,” said Sergeant Terry Sullivan of the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office. “We are looking to expand that number and establish a more effective connection between the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office and the Hanover business community.”
The purpose of the Hanover County Business Watch program is to encourage the free exchange of information and crime prevention techniques between the Sheriff's Office and area businesses. It is modeled after the similar and highly successful Neighborhood Watch Program.
Business Watches are organized by geographical area. Watch activities are facilitated by Business Watch coordinators chosen by area members who act as liaisons between the Sheriff's Office and the business community. Members are also sent e-mail notices of crimes affecting the business community and tips on how to prevent crimes against businesses.
“The program was formed to build a partnership between Hanover county businesses and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office,” said Jim McLaughlin, Crime Prevention Specialist. “We want businesses to be well-informed and feel comfortable reaching out to the sheriff’s office.”
The Business Watch program also offers free business security audits and specialized training by the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office. The objective is to educate business people to recognize crime risks and to train employees to accurately report crimes.
