Hanover’s Perspective

Virginia Has Fastest Internet Speed

For the fastest Internet service in the United States, look no further than Virginia. With an average of 13.7 megabits per second, Virginia holds the top spot for the top speed in Internet access, according to a report from Broadview Networks.

“High-speed broadband connectivity is essential for economic growth. It is a vital component for business expansions, home-based businesses and start-up ventures,” says Edwin Gaskin, Hanover County director of economic development. “This report complements the tax advantages, Interstate access and other business strengths that exist in Hanover County.”

Virginia edged out Delaware with an average download speed of 13.1 Mbps. Rounding out the top five were Massachusetts at 13.1 Mbps, Rhode Island at 12.9 Mbps, and District Of Columbia at 12.8 Mbps. In Hanover, utilities include an extensive fiber optic network with digital switching capability and a Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) with self-healing fiber optic rings.

The data was compiled by Broadview using Akamai’s “State Of The Internet” report.

According to Akamai, states with an average speed higher than 10 Mbps it count as having “high broadband.” In all, 26 states achieved this status. No state fell into the “low broadband” category, which is an average lower than 4 Mbps.
