What to Expect When the World Cycles into Hanover

The 2015 World Cycling Championships will be in Richmond from September 19–27. One event, the Elite Men’s Individual Time Trial, will begin on September 23 at 1 p.m. at Kings Dominion. This race will travel mostly along Route 301 in Hanover County and result in significant road closures. 

Schedule for Road Closures: 

  • 11 a.m. Soft road closure of Route 301 North and Southbound between Interstate 295 and Route 30.
  • 12 p.m. Complete closure of roads to secure the race course along Route 301 North and Southbound between Interstate 295 to Route 30. Georgetown Road will be closed in its entirety. Rural Point Road will be closed between Georgetown Road and Route 301.
  • 1 p.m. Start Time of Elite Men’s Individual Time Trial. Racers leave at staggered intervals from Kings Dominion.
  • 3 p.m. The last rider will leave Kings Dominion.
  • 3:30 p.m. The last rider will finish in Richmond.
  • 4 p.m. All roads should be fully opened.

Get in on the Action:

Viewing parties will be held in three locations:
Kings Dominion – The kickoff party will offer cyclist photos and autographs.
Bikes, Brews & BBQ at Hanover Tavern – “Bikes, Brews & BBQ” will be a free, family-friendly event offering prime viewing spots, food and beverages.
Hanover Bike Fest at Rutland Commons – Enjoy food, beverages, live music and vendors. The event can be accessed via Cool Spring Road and Combs Road while Route 301 is closed.

Get Involved:

There are many opportunities to get involved including volunteering and partnering. Exhibitors can take part in the FanFest 2015 held at the Greater Richmond Convention Center. Richmond 2015 also offers event updates, promotional materials, and guidance on maximizing the benefits of the World Championships before, during and after the event through the Societe 2015 program.
