The Richmond Region’s mid-East Coast location has made it a natural transportation and logistics center. Many successful supply chain and logistics companies have established facilities providing materials handling, warehousing, packing and transportation services. Amazon operates four facilities in the region, employing thousands of local workers. Federal Express and UPS have regional hubs in the area. CSX, Norfolk Southern and AMTRAK provide rail service and James River Barge Service serves the Richmond Marine Terminal, which connects to the Port of Virginia 100 miles away. The region is also a major military logistics center and home to the U.S. Army Logistics University at Fort Lee and to Defense Supply Center Richmond. DSC Logistics, XPO Logistics and Riverside Logistics are 3PLs operating in the area. Logistics service providers also include CEVA Logistics, Richmond Cold Storage, Cockrell Distribution Systems and Schenker Logistics.

Subcategories of the logistics industry cluster include fulfillment centers, warehousing and wholesale trade. According to the Greater Richmond Partnership, the Greater Richmond Supply Chain as of the end of 2018 consisted of over 2,900 supply chain establishments with over 55,000 workers. Hanover County, ideally situated along major interstate corridors, contributes to this network with an impressive list of logistics companies located within its borders.

To help meet the ever growing demand for certified logistics associates and technicians, The Community College Workforce Alliance (CCWA) has provided online access to its Certified Logistics Associate (CLA) and Certified Logistics Technician (CLT) programs.
