Hanover County continues to see strong private-sector investment with the opening of a new Kroger Marketplace at 6468 Mechanicsville Turnpike in Mechanicsville, Virginia. Representing a $40 million investment, the new store is a clear example of reinvestment in an established corridor, replacing the older, smaller Kroger located less than one mile away.

The new 123,000-square-foot Marketplace is one of Kroger’s largest stores in the Mid-Atlantic and more than doubles the size of the previous store. This transition reflects Kroger’s long-term commitment to the Mechanicsville market, ensuring that residents are served by a modern, expanded facility designed to meet evolving consumer needs.

The Grand Opening on April 15, 2026, drew strong participation from the community and local leadership, including members of the Hanover County Board of Supervisors and County administration. Senator Ryan McDougle and Delegate Scott Wyatt delivered remarks during the ceremony. The event attracted a large crowd of residents eager to explore the new store and take advantage of grand opening specials.

The Marketplace format introduces a wider range of products and services beyond traditional grocery stores. Customers can access expanded fresh food departments, specialty items, home goods, and apparel all within a single location.  Additional amenities, including a pharmacy and fuel center, further position the new store as a convenient, full-service retail destination for the surrounding community.

The new store is expected to support approximately 300 jobs, reinforcing Kroger’s role as a major employer while contributing to Hanover County’s economic base. The scale of the investment and employment underscores the importance of this project as both a retail upgrade and an economic driver.

The new Kroger Marketplace stands as a strong example of how reinvestment in existing locations can drive economic vitality—delivering improved services to residents while supporting long-term growth in Hanover County.
