Hanover’s Perspective

Hanover Schools Continue to Lead the Region

Hanover County Public Schools had the highest overall scores in the Richmond region for the Virginia Department of Education's (VDOE) Standards of Learning (SOL) test results.

When comparing the current SOL scores to those of last year and those of the state average, Hanover students performed at a similar level as the previous year and performed above the state average.

For Hanover County, the VDOE reports that 83 percent of students received a passing score in the reading and writing category while 82 percent passed in the mathematics category. The rate among other school districts in the region did not exceed 77 percent for either category.

Students did not drop more than 5 percent in any of the 34 tests. Such a drop would result in a school losing its Federal accreditation. For a school to earn full accreditation, at least 75 percent of students must pass reading and writing SOL tests, and at least 70 percent must pass state assessments in mathematics, science and social studies.

Among Virginia's school divisions totaling more than 15,000 students, Hanover has a 95.5 percent graduation rate, the second highest four-year cohort graduation rate in the state. The district also has the second lowest dropout rate of 2.6 percent, well below the statewide rate of 5.9 percent. Hanover is proud that 99.7 percent of the core academic classes are taught by teachers meeting the federal definition of “highly qualified.”

“The best and the brightest future employees are right here in Hanover County,” said Edwin Gaskin, Hanover County's Economic Development Director. “Our students are continuing to achieve and improve with each passing year. This is an incredible accomplishment and a testament to the hard work and dedication, not just of the students, but also of our teachers, school staff and community.”
