Hanover’s Perspective

Hanover’s Must-See Spots for Cycling Fans

On September 23, the world’s top road cyclists will battle it out in Hanover County during the UCI Road World Championships Men’s Elite Time Trials – but that’s just the beginning of the action!

Hanover County, with its natural beauty, national landmarks and terrain ranging from rural roads to family-friendly trails, has long been a favorite among cyclists. Riders can enjoy scenes dotted with historic homes and rolling countryside, and routes ranges from 10 miles to 100 miles.

The Richmond Area Bicycling Association (RABA) regularly organizes rides through Historic Hanover, the Town of Ashland and other areas. RABA also hosts the Heart of Virginia Bike Festival being held this year on September 12 at the historic Hanover County Courthouse.

Hanover County has so much to offer, and here are a few of the many great spots that can’t be missed. Whether you’re packing a helmet or a cowbell, find out why cyclists love Hanover County!

1. Ashland Coffee and Tea. On any given weekend, you’ll find dozens of bikes parked outside of this quaint coffee house. Aside from coffee and a blend-your-own tea bar, you can grab sandwiches and light faire for breakfast or lunch. It’s the perfect place to power up for a day of cycling.

2. Hanover Bike Routes. Hanover County is a favorite riding spot for cyclists from the Richmond area. Routes will have you spinning past Scotchtown, the home of Patrick Henry and one of Virginia’s oldest plantation houses, or mountain biking among well-preserved earthworks of an 1864 Civil War battleground.

3. Ashland Bicycle Gardens. Bicycles of all colors have sprouted in the Town of Ashland creating displays that are part garden and part art! The Ashland Main Street Association has created a fun scavenger hunt and map to help you explore each and every one.

4. UCI Fan Zones. Three fan zones — at Kings Dominion, Hanover Tavern and Rutland Commons — are your front-row seats to watch the UCI Elite Men’s Individual Time Trial on September 23. The fan zones are free, family-friendly events offering prime viewing spots, food, beverages, live music and vendors.

5. Lark Bake Shoppe and Cafe. After a day of cycling, cheering or scavenger hunting, you deserve a treat! This locally owned bakery in Mechanicsville offers delicious cupcakes, cookies and other sweets. Live like a local and visit on Friday evenings when cake slices are only $5.99. Or, get in line early on Saturday morning for a popular Lark cinnamon roll before they sell out!
