Kings Dominion Turns 50: A Legacy of Fun, Community, and Opportunity in Hanover County
Kings Dominion is celebrating an incredible milestone in 2025 — 50 years of thrills, growth, and community right here in Hanover County, Virginia. Since opening in 1975, the park has grown into a major entertainment destination and one of the largest employers in the region, playing a key role in shaping both the local economy and the lives of thousands who have worked there.
Founded by Taft Broadcasting in the early 1970s, Kings Dominion was strategically built between Richmond and Washington, D.C., thanks to affordable land, a strong population base, and access to Interstate 95. The park opened with five themed areas, highlighted by the Eiffel Tower replica and Lion Country Safari — a drive-through animal experience that gave guests a sneak peek before the official launch. Over the decades, it has continued to evolve with new rides, a water park, a campground, and seasonal events like Halloween Haunt.
More than just an amusement park, Kings Dominion employs 2,500 to 3,000 people annually — offering jobs in ride operations, food service, entertainment, tech services, trades, and maintenance. Many employees start young and stay for decades, growing into leadership roles. “I’ve been here 34 years,” said Brian Rath, Director of Maintenance and Construction. “I started out on the Rebel Yell as a teenager and just kept moving up.” That story reflects the park’s strong commitment to development, mentorship, and internal promotion.
“A lot of young people have come through and learned how to be leaders here. They’ve then taken out into the real world, whether that be in Hanover or the region or beyond,” says Rath.
Kings Dominion plays a vital role in the broader Hanover County community and Greater Richmond Region. Its success is closely tied to local businesses and strengthened by strong partnerships with county officials, first responders, and community leaders. In return, Hanover County provides a business-friendly environment rooted in collaboration and community support. Many companies appreciate the area’s welcoming spirit, excellent schools, and active neighborhoods — all of which help create a thriving place to live and work.
“I live here, I work here, I play here. I think it’s a great county to live in, to grow up in!”
As part of its 50th anniversary, Kings Dominion launched a season full of celebration, including live shows at the reopened Kings Dominion Theater, a dazzling nightly light show on International Street, and family-friendly fun like the Gazillion Bubbles show. The park continues to invest in new experiences, like the recently opened Rapterra roller coaster, which brought in international experts and local trades to bring it to life.
For many, Kings Dominion isn’t just a job — it’s a place to learn, grow, and become part of something bigger. Whether you’re visiting for the day, starting a career, or looking to relocate, Hanover County and Kings Dominion offer a unique blend of opportunity, energy, and community spirit.
Happy 50th, Kings Dominion — and here’s to the next 50 years of fun and impact in Hanover County!
